Before I get to the city building, I want to talk about the colonists. You have a selection of applicants for each job and who you pick is up to you. I found that going for the strait-laced best person for the job was the way to make things easier. However, if you want to “spice” things up a bit you can hire people such as those who have various problems be it something like an issue with alcohol or some kind of mental health issue if you want. If you do this it can affect not just how they do their job, but the people around them too.
Home Is Where The Heart Is
The building aspect of Surviving Mars is not for the faint of heart and there is a lot of trial and error here. Having power lines, the right kind of food, the right kind of housing, the right kind of resources, in general, is very challenging. Not just getting the resources, but managing them correctly. I actually started and quit three different games before I got to grips with it all and was happy with my progress. So, do not be disheartened if it takes you a while to “get it” that for me is part of the fun.
Choose Your Experience
There are two aspects of the game I have to touch on, one is choosing your experience. This adds story elements to it there are (I think) 12 of these that can happen and there can be variations. The one that I enjoyed the most was where micro life was discovered and how this affected things. You can also choose who is “backing” you. This is really what defines the difficulty of the game. You can have it so you are more refined with what you can spend or you can have it so money is pretty much no object.
I had a great time with Surviving Mars. It is a game that makes you work hard to figure things out, even if you have a huge almost unlimited budget to play with. However, I think that this is actually pretty good as no doubt there would be a lot of trial and error and many things that could go wrong if we ever do decide to colonize mars! If you like city building and strategy games make sure you check this one out.
